Sexiest Stars of 2019
19. MICHELLE WILLIAMS - She got her start in the hit TV series Dawon's Creek (1998). Of all the people in that cast though, she's probably the most successful. She went on to become nominated for the Academy Award four times. She's great in things like Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Blue Valentine (2010). However, her best performance is the role that brought her back to TV after being gone for 15 years, and that's Fosse/Verdon in which she plays Gwen Verdon. This role also brought her an Emmy Award and Golden Globe, which she absolutely deserved.
18. BRIAN J. SMITH - He came out as gay back in November for Attitude magazine. He was mainly a stage actor who was even nominated for a Tony Award for his role in gay playwright, Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie (2013). Prior to that, he played gay characters in two independent films, that of Hate Crime (2006) and The War Boys (2010). He's done a small range of television, but his two major roles prior to 2019 was Stargate Universe (2009) and Sense8 (2015), which was a very strong LGBTQ series. This past year, he appeared in two shows. One is USA's Treadstone, which is a spin-off of The Bourne Identity films, where he plays more an action figure. The second is BBC's World on Fire in which he plays a gay doctor who is incredibly sexy.
17. LIZZO - She's best known for her music. She was nominated for eight prizes at this year's 62nd Grammy Awards, including the top four categories, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. It's silly that she's being recognized as a new artist, given she's been around for a few years. Her current album is actually her third. Yet, this is the year that she popped in the collective culture, so much so that she made Time magazine's list of Entertainer of the Year. She's all about body positivity and sex positivity. Her catch line is that she is "100% that bitch." Some of her gay fans are called "Lizzibians." I normally wouldn't recognize a musician, but she's also an actress. She was a voice in Uglydolls (2019) and she was featured in the Jennifer Lopez film Hustlers (2019).
16. GINO ANTHONY PESI - Speaking of Jennifer Lopez, this 39-year-old actor caught my attention when he played the sexy, love interest to J.Lo in NBC's Shades of Blue (2016). The Pittsburgh native took an even sexier role this past year, opposite Robin Givens in OWN's Ambitions.
15. FLORENCE PUGH - She's 24 and she only started appearing in movies and TV five years ago, but she made a huge impact in her role in the British independent film Lady Macbeth (2016). This year was a really standout year for her. She starred in three, major, Hollywood flicks, including Fighting With My Family (2019), Midsommar (2019) and Little Women (2019).
14. MCKINLEY BELCHER III - This actor has also had a busy year. At the beginning of the year, he had a significant role in FOX's The Passage, which unfortunately was cancelled. He does have an ongoing role in Netflix's Ozark. However, this past year, he appeared in four films. Most of which were brief parts, such as Trial By Fire (2019), The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019), Marriage Story (2019) and Mapplethorpe (2019). His role in Mapplethorpe made a point to say how gorgeous Belcher is, being that he played a nude model in that film.
13. MEAGAN GOOD - Her first major role was at sixteen when she appeared in Eve's Bayou (1997). She's had a career that's spanned over 20 years. She's described herself as a "sexy Christian." She's been considered somewhat of a sex symbol for nearly all of those 20 years. Her sex appeal is the target of an older man's obsession in the film The Intruder (2019). She also had a surprising role in the super-hero film Shazam! (2019).
12. LUKE EVANS - The 40-year-old was in Tate Taylor's Ma (2019). He was strangely fetishized in that film. He's a Welsh beefcake who has been in a ton of huge epics like Clash of the Titans (2010), Robin Hood (2010) and Immortals (2011) in which he played Zeus where he showed off all his muscular glory. He played the dashing Gaston in the remake of Beauty and the Beast (2017). This past year was a busy year for the openly gay actor with four movies to promote.
11. GINA TORRES - The stunning woman is of Cuban descent. I first noticed her nearly twenty years ago in the sequels to The Matrix (1999). She's done a lot of television in the interim. She's also done a lot of vocal or voice-over work, mainly because she has an amazing, sexy and sultry voice. True fans will know her from Firefly (2002) and Suits (2011). This past year, she took the lead in USA's Pearson (2019), a spin-off of Suits, one of the best new shows of the past year.
10. HARRY SHUM JR. - The 37-year-old was born in Costa Rica and was raised to speak Spanish, but he's of Chinese descent. He got his start in Hollywood by being a dancer and choreographer. He popped up in several films. He's best known for his role on the TV series Glee (2009). He had a brief role in the blockbuster film Crazy Rich Asians, but he's currently on the fantasy series Shadowhunters, which his appeal is illustrated in the YouTube video of Shum reading thirst tweets.
9. NIECY NASH - She's an Emmy-nominated actress who has been working in television since the mid 90's. She's had a long career and been in dozens of projects from Reno 911! to Masters of Sex. She's mainly known for her comedic performances, but she can do drama. Nothing proves that than her role in the series on Netflix, When They See Us (2019), which is about the Central Park Five. She plays the mother of one of the accused. However, the reason she's on this list is her role on TNT's Claws, which is now in its third season. I overlooked the first, two seasons, but thanks to Hulu I've caught up, and her sexiness and her being a boss are completely undeniable.
8. STEPHAN JAMES - He's 26 and is from Canada. He's of Jamaican descent. He started acting as a teenager on the high school series Degrassi: The Next Generation. He stepped into the consciousness of some when he portrayed civil rights leader, John Lewis, in the Oscar-winning film Selma (2014). He really didn't get on my radar until his role of Olympian, Jesse Owens in Race (2016). Yet, it wasn't until If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) that his sex appeal was really put on display. In terms of acting though, he really impressed me in his role in Amazon's Homecoming (2018), opposite Julia Roberts. This past year, he simply had one film, 21 Bridges (2019).
7. SCARLETT JOHANSSON - She has said and done some things in recent years that have been off-putting for me and others, but it can't be denied that she had a pretty fantastic, past year. She starred in one of the biggest blockbusters of the year Avengers: Endgame (2019). She's also getting awards recognition for two films Jojo Rabbit (2019) and Marriage Story (2019), the latter of which might get Johansson her first acting nomination at the Oscars.
6. YAHYA ABDUL MATEEN II - The 33-year-old is really new to the acting game. He attended Yale School of Drama, but he thought he'd have a career in architecture and housing. That career wasn't working out so on a whim he went after acting and his talent was instantly seen. His first on-screen performance was in Baz Luhrman's The Get Down (2016) on Netflix. His rèsumè from that point only became more and more impressive. He then popped up in Baywatch (2017), opposite Dwayne Johnson, The Greatest Showman (2017), opposite Hugh Jackman, and Aquaman (2018), opposite Jason Momoa. He even popped up in Jordan Peele's Us (2019). His inclusion on this list comes from his television appearances this past year. His role in Netflix's Black Mirror in the episode "Striking Vipers" has him as a sexy, video-game, sex addict. His role in HBO's Watchmen has him doing several full-frontal nude scenes, showing off his very chiseled body, which he did a video for Men's Health on how he got that ripped physique.
5. NAOMI SCOTT - She's a 26-year-old actress from London, England. She's half-Indian. She was in the short-lived Terra Nova on FOX. She also played the Pink Ranger in the reboot of Power Rangers (2017). It was quite the career-changer when she was cast to play Princess Jasmine in the live-action remake of Aladdin (2019). The film got middle-of-the-road reviews. A lot of people distinguish her as a standout, mainly because she's given a new song to sing that wasn't in the original. The new song is in the vein of "Let It Go" from Frozen, but it may not catch on as successfully. The song is called "Speechless" and she really belts it out impressively.
4. MICHAEL B. JORDAN - The 32-year-old has been acting since he was a child. A lot of people probably remember him as a teenager on HBO's The Wire. He did a few years on the defunct soap opera All My Children. He also had stints on two other critically-acclaimed series, that of NBC's Friday Night Lights and Parenthood. He didn't catch my attention until his role in the film Chronicle (2012) in which he played a teen boy who gets super powers. He was part of the ensemble film, Red Tails (2012), but he wasn't recognized for his acting until his role in Fruitvale Station (2013). That film catapulted him in a way. His movie-star status was cemented with his titular role in Creed (2015). That movie also cemented his status as a sex symbol. He became an even bigger star thanks to him playing the sexy villain in Black Panther (2018). All of that appeal and charm was brought to his current film Just Mercy (2019), which has him embracing a persona akin to classic Hollywood.
3. MARGOT ROBBIE - The 29-year-old Australian actress has done what a lot of young Australian actors have done and that's appear in the soap opera Neighbours. She was catapulted into the limelight, playing opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). She was opposite Will Smith in the sexy thriller Focus (2015). Her status as a sex symbol was cemented in the Oscar-winning The Big Short (2015). She proved herself a tremendous actress when she was nominated for the Oscar for her titular role in I, Tonya (2017). She's probably going to be nominated for the Oscar again for her role in Bombshell (2019). All of her appeal and charm was brought to good use in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
2. BRAD PITT - Speaking of that Tarantino film, that 2019 flick starred Brad Pitt, proving again and again why he's the supreme sex symbol when it comes to male actors who have ever been alive. He also was in the same film as Robbie in The Big Short as well, but unlike Robbie his sex appeal wasn't being utilized. Until now with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he hasn't really used his looks or his sex appeal in a film in a long while. He's been in a lot of stuff, but his sex appeal hasn't really been a factor in a film since arguably The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), mainly because it was a love story. His role in his ex-wife's film By the Sea (2015) didn't even utilize that sex appeal, and in fact used it against him in that movie. Not much more needs to be said. Most know that People magazine named him the "Sexiest Man Alive" twice. Other magazines have done the same and Time magazine named him one of the most influential. Pitt was in what I feel is the best film of the decade, that of The Tree of Life (2011) but I was impressed with one particular film this past year, that of Ad Astra (2019).
1. BEYONCÉ - I don't think I need to explain who she is. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She is an internationally known pop star. Her name is recognized all over the world. She has a fan following that is greater and more aggressive than any other. She could have made the top of this list every year since she became a solo artist in 2003. Prior to that, she was in a 90's girl group known as Destiny's Child. The 37-year-old from Houston, Texas, is beyond beautiful. The reason she makes this list this year is because she released a movie, which she directed, called Homecoming on Netflix that was based on her mind-blowing performance at Coachella last year.
Honorable mentions are those featured in ESPN magazine's "Body Issue 2019," which include the Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Line and Myles Garrett, the Defensive End for the Cleveland Browns. Shout out to Sydney Park from Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, Kyle Lowder from Days of Our Lives, as well as David Tag of Hollyoaks and Tom Ellis of Lucifer.
