Best Music of 2024

Beyoncé is the most nominated artist at the 67th Grammy Awards. She has 11 nominations. Five of those are in the Country & American Roots categories. This was after her record Cowboy Carter (2024) became the first album by a Black woman to top the country charts. Her song "Texas Hold 'Em" became the first country song by a Black woman to top the Billboard 100 charts, as well as the Hot Country Songs charts. This comes after she faced a lot of controversy for releasing a country song from her album Lemonade (2016) called "Daddy Lessons," which the Recording Academy rejected from being considered a country song. She was nominated for Best Country Album. She isn't the first Black woman to do so. Mickey Guyton was nominated in this category before her at the 64th Grammys. Yet, Beyoncé could be the first to win in that category, which would be monumental.

However, all eyes will be looking to see if Cowboy Carter will win in the main category of Album of the Year. This is a category that Beyoncé has not won, despite her being one of the most nominated artists in the history of that show. The last time a Black woman won in that category was back in the 41st Grammy Awards, so over 25 years ago. The easy prediction would be that Taylor Swift wins yet again, but Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX and Billie Eilish are also up for Album of the Year. Either one of them could take it for the cultural impacts that these young women have had over the past year or so.

Putting Beyoncé aside, when it comes to Black artists entering the country music space with a splash, one artist that has to be recognized is Shaboozey. His track "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" was number one on the Billboard 100 for 19 nonconsecutive weeks becoming a five-times platinum recording. It was basically the song of the summer. It's now tied for longest running number-one song of all time. It's nominated for Song of the Year and Shaboozey is up for Best New Artist, as well as five other awards, including one with Beyoncé. He'll likely perform at the awards show, but odds are he'll also be on stage holding a trophy.

Finally, for those who remember the rap battle between Kendrick Lamar and Drake earlier this year with the series of diss tracks released back-and-forth between the two, it's obvious the Grammys crowned a winner or certainly had their favorite. Lamar was nominated for 7 Grammys. Most of them were for his diss track called "Not Like Us," which got listed for Best Rap Performance, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The lesson to be learned is don't get on Lamar's bad side.
