Best Movies of 2025... So Far
Disney has been on a roller coaster in terms of its box office performances. Its Snow White remake bombed, but its remake of Lilo & Stitch did fairly well, reaching nearly a billion-dollars. It's 2nd to A Minecraft Movie in terms of American-produced blockbusters. Disney's Marvel films so far haven't done what some had hoped. Its next installment is The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which could go either way. It could be a win or a loss.
However, going back to Warner Bros., a film that did better domestically than either of Marvel's first, two films this year was Ryan Coogler's Sinners. Coogler made two Marvel films himself. He did Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). His latest is a period piece about the American South taking place in the vampire genre. It didn't make as much money worldwide, as his Disney flicks, but the film became a cultural phenomena, much in the same way that Black Panther did. Sinners is in the top ten worldwide box office for this year and is so far the highest grossing original film in that list with Joseph Kosinski's F1: The Movie right behind it, starring Brad Pitt and up-and-comer Damson Idris.David Koepp is a Hollywood screenwriter. He's best known for writing the script for Jurassic Park (1993). This year, he wrote the script for Jurassic World: Rebirth (2025), the latest entry in that franchise. That film is estimated to make a lot of money. However, Koepp has two scripts that were produced this year. The other that's probably the most interesting is his script for Steven Soderbergh's Black Bag (2025).
I'm not really into slasher flicks, but Heart Eyes (2025), which stars Mason Gooding is another honorable mention. It's likely starting to be forgotten, as the only horror film to stand the test of time so far is Sinners. In fact, people are predicting that Sinners will be remembered all the way to the end of the year when it's time to nominate films for awards. Some are even predicting that Sinners could be up for Best Picture. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I absolutely support Coogler's continued success. No one knows who will win at the Oscars, but a guaranteed statue is going to Tom Cruise who is winning an honorary Oscar for his lifetime achievement. Here is my list of favorite films, as of July 4, 2025.
