DVD Review - Skyline

A lesser version of Spielberg's War of the Worlds has no more satisfying a run than the standard horror movie where you watch a bunch of twentysomethings get picked off one by one. The epilogue makes no sense or else is just rather ridiculous and pointless.

Unlike Spielberg, this movie never branches out. It is truly claustrophobic. The first act sets up the half dozen or so characters. There is a Hollywood friendship and a surprising pregnancy, but none of it matters. This movie becomes all about the special effects. The actors, which include Eric Balfour and Donald Faison, do a good job of portraying terror and at times paranoia, but there's nothing else to it.

Like with TV shows and movies about vampires and werewolves, this movie, as it's being released on video, is part of a tide of movies and television about alien invasion. Aside from people being scared and running from big aliens and their big crazy and often slimy technology, you hope for something more. Skyline kills your hope of anything more. It's a standard, horror movie.

One Star out of Five.
Rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence, some language and brief sexual content.
Running Time: 1 hr. and 34 mins.
