DVD Review - Something Borrowed

Ginnifer Goodwin & Colin Egglesfield
in "Something Borrowed"
Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love) is Rachel, a New York City lawyer who just turned 30-years-old. Her best friend Darcy, played by Kate Hudson, is about to get married to Dex, played by Colin Egglesfield. Six years ago, while Rachel was still in law school, she had a crush on Dex, but she never said anything. She stupidly walked away.

John Krasinski co-stars as Ethan, Rachel's best male friend. Krasinski displays a whole lot more energy than he typically does on The Office. However, his role here is similar to that in It's Complicated (2009) where he again learns about an affair. He by far gets the funniest lines in the movie. He's not only the comic relief but also he says often what the audience is thinking.

Obviously, Rachel had more than a crush, and so did Dex. The two are in love, but somehow Dex ended up engaged to Rachel's best friend. Everything that happens in this movie is done only to postpone the inevitable, which is Rachel and Dex getting together. There are some twists that make that inevitability actually more inevitable and an easier path to reach, so why it's drawn out is baffling.

Based on the book by Emily Giffin, this film seems to be about the friendship between Rachel and Darcy. The affair with Dex seems to be the ultimate test of that relationship. There's only one problem. We never believe that Dex and Darcy would ever be together, let alone be engaged.

Aside from the fact that Hudson is a gorgeous girl, the real-life daughter of Goldie Hawn, and, aside from Egglesfield looking like a taller Tom Cruise, there's not much attraction between these two. Hudson as Darcy has a personality that's a little repulsive in fact. Yes, she's nice and playful with her friend, but there's nothing to make us understand why she and Dex get this close to the altar.

Two Stars out of Five.
Rated PG-13 for sexual content and some drug material.
Running Time: 1 hr. and 52 mins.
